Three Sailing Tips for Safer Sailing Today

What sailing tips would you put into play today to build your small sailboat a safer platform for her sailing crew? Do your inexperienced crew members be aware of body motions they must use for safety on the ocean? Follow this straightforward sailing safety advice and pass it along to your crew.

Falling overboard continues to be #1 nightmare of sailors worldwide. Serious injury from your fall could render someone unconscious. Darkness and seas hamper recovery efforts. If coastal sailing, you need to set up when to help the crew in moving in regards to the boat.

Rig jacklines from your stout bow cleat back to a large stern cleat for both sides with the boat. Wear a safety harness if alone on deck, during the night, or during heavy sailing weather.

Equip harnesses with dual tethers furnished with carbiner or quick-release hooks (such as those created by Wichard). Clip to the windward jackline to go fore and aft. Maintain the crew within the cockpit whenever you can.

Practice these three basic sailing body motions for safety at sea in any sailing weather. Once the heavy stuff hits the fan, you and your sailing crew will be ready:

1. Grasp a Handhold

Hold onto something whenever aboard, whether in the dock, at anchor or underway. Grab lifelines, grab rails, sailboat mast or boom.

Its rare to locate proper overhead grab rails down inside the cabin. Mount several between your galley and forward v-berth. Handicap grab bars provide a good alternative to teak handrails at a fraction with the cost. Cover all of them with rope fancy work with an operating, attractive, salty look.

2. Look Before you decide to Move

Look down, then forward before you decide to move. Step over headsail sheets, winches, rope clutch gear, deck cleats and slippery boat sails. Keep lines coiled and dealt with to stop injury.

3. Squat Below Upper Lifeline Level

Keep the knees beneath the level of the uppermost lifeline. If thrown against the lifeline, this provides more area to brace your system. Squat like a linebacker to go fore or aft. This lowers your center of gravity toward the deck. In heavy weather sailing, reduce your center of gravity even more. Crawl in your belly if needed.

Pass these sailing tips along for your sailing crew how to have them risk-free around the waters of the world. You may enjoy stress-free sailing as soon as you do--wherever in the world you determine to go cruise!
